Why an infertility coaching group for newly diagnosed infertility patients?
If you have just been diagnosed with infertility, you probably feel that life has become something terribly different.
Maybe your OB/GYN has just told you that she wants to refer you on to a fertility specialist. Maybe you have your first appointment already scheduled. Or maybe your first appointment with a reproductive endocrinologist has taken place and a battery of diagnostic tests is to be scheduled. Whatever your circumstances may be at the moment, you are entering a whole new world – the bewildering world of infertility.
Unfamiliar terminology, overwhelming tests and procedures, perplexing options and difficult choices – there is a lot to learn. Maybe the apprehension and anxiety has begun to build.
Emotionally, you may already feel spent. You never dreamed you would have difficulty having a baby. This is the kind of thing that happens to “other people”.
You may also feel alone. Nobody else you know is struggling with infertility. You feel as though you cannot talk with anybody else about this.
Receiving a diagnosis of infertility has been a blow. Your dreams may seem to have come to a screeching halt. It feels like your entering the unknown and there is no path out. “Will I ever have a baby?”

Emotional, physical and relational health.
You will receive coaching from the fertility nurse as to how to engage this journey in a healthy manner – how to achieve balance in your life.
It is true that you desire more than anything to have a baby. How do you balance this with everything else important in your life? There is a significant other that covets a healthy relationship with you. There is family and friends that desire your presence. There is still your professional life that needs attention, colleagues that wish for your time and unfinished business that relentlessly calls for you.
Yet, in all of this, there is a powerful tendency to completely immerse yourself in the pursuit of fertility to the point that all else suffers. The Fertility Nurse will coach on maintaining a healthy balance in your life – how to pursue with passion your dream of having a baby and continue to foster the other relationships in your life.
You may be experiencing many different emotions. You may be excited because you’re taking a new step. You may be experiencing a sense of loss because you were not able to get pregnant on your own. You may have much fear because of the many unknowns that lie ahead. You may be experiencing all of these emotions at once.
This is an emotionally charged time for you. The fertility nurse will help you cope with the emotions you are facing and the strain it may be putting on your relationships, particularly the relationship with your significant other.

A strong, powerful and supportive community.
Another valuable form of support you will receive is support from others in the group. Your fellow group participants are moving through the same experiences as you. They may be at the same point or at a different point in the process. You will benefit from their support, encouragement, wisdom, challenges, ideas and responses.
Participants at different points along the journey can offer insight, dispel fears and lend guidance. They will provide you a valuable view based on the process, decisions and outcomes they’re facing.
There is much to gain from others in the same situation as you:
- Feedback as to what worked well and what didn’t work so well and what could be done differently.
- Insight from what other physicians may have recommended to other participants.
- Guidance from the questions others have asked their physicians and from the ways they have engaged their health care providers.
- Direction from the measures others have taken to ensure they were comfortable with their treatment plan.
- Counsel from participants who have successfully ensured that their relationships (with spouse and/or others) haven’t broken down.
- Advice from others regarding what areas in their relationships were more apt to break down and why.
The value of community at this time in your life cannot be overstated. We are not meant to engage these times in our life alone.
