What you can expect in an infertility group for patients using donor sperm.
This group provides an incredible opportunity to receive support – support in many different forms.
Support through relational and emotional issues.
You may be experiencing many different emotions regarding the decision to proceed with a donor sperm. You may be eager to take the next step. You may be experiencing a sense of loss because she was not able to achieve pregnancy with your sperm. You may have much fear because of the many unknowns that lie ahead. You may be experiencing all of these emotions at once.
When male factor infertility is diagnosed, relationship difficulty often develops. Difficulties may arise for many reasons. You may carry feelings of guilt and believe you have let down your spouse. You may feel that you have disappointed her. In fact disappointment is likely to occur. Relationship difficulty can then be intensified by her uneasiness to express her own feelings, not wanting to add to the weight you’re already under.
This is an emotionally charged time for you. The fertility nurse will help you cope with the emotions you are facing and the strain it may be putting on your relationships, particularly the relationship with your significant other.

Guidance through difficult issues and dilemmas.
There will be many tough decisions and interesting dilemmas as you move through this process. For example, you’ll have the opportunity to consider whether you’re going to disclose to your child that they were conceived using donor sperm – that they are not genetically linked to their father. How will you approach this sensitive issue with your child? You can receive input from the fertility nurse as well as your fellow participants who are facing the same dilemma.
There will be opportunity to talk about your feelings toward this issue and many others. What are the pros and cons? How are others processing these issues and issues like this?
The final decisions you make will be yours. And you will move forward with confidence from these decisions knowing that have had the opportunity to speak with others about these sensitive issues and to hear many options and alternatives – an opportunity that few people have.
The power of the small group community cannot be overstated!
