Jan and James tell of their experience with the fertility nurse. Here’s a real life story about how one-on-one coaching is changing the way infertility is experienced.

What was your experience of infertility prior to your relationship with the fertility nurse?

“When we were first diagnosed with infertility, the procedures described by our fertility specialist were detailed and the terminology was unfamiliar. All the information presented was totally new to us and the recommendations for treatments and tests were intimidating. This all added to the anxiety we were already feeling from the official news that conceiving a baby would only be possible with medical intervention.

“Because of our particular situation, it was imperative that we didn’t waste time. And without medical insurance to cover our reproductive treatments we decided to take steps that would maximize success. We went to the best reproductive endocrinologist in the state.

“The best physicians are busy. Our specialist and his staff were often unavailable to thoroughly discuss all our questions and concerns to the degree that we wished.

“We wished for somebody to talk to before and after each visit to the clinic. We wished for a caring expert to talk through our concerns when we had more time to digest the information our physician gave us. We wished we knew what questions to ask and what the implications were of our physician’s answers.”

What did the fertility nurse do for you? What fertility coaching services did she provide?

“Our fertility nurse, Cheri, was always accessible to us. She provided timely and direct supplemental knowledge and support for us. Since this is all that she does – providing support services to couples like us – she was always there for us for however long we needed her. She was truly amazing.

“She was available after each of our visits to the clinic. She helped us to understand our options. She was accessible when we had difficulty with our self-injections. She stepped us through. Cheri was always a welcomed source of information and inspiration. She gave us peace of mind.

“Every conversation with our specialist and his staff introduced us to unfamiliar language, acronyms, technologies or medications. When we felt like we were on a roller coaster ride of information, Cheri would cut through all the new medical jargon. She calmed our fears and lessened our anxiety.”

Now that you are in a coaching relationship with the fertility nurse, what is your experience of infertility like?

“We have a much better understanding of the procedures prior to and during treatment.

“Because Cheri is there to support us with the emotional aspects of infertility, we are much more comfortable with the whole process.

“For us, knowing that there is a professional, knowledgeable nurse to talk to outside of the office has reduced our level of stress and given us more peace of mind than we could have ever imagined.

“Our work towards conception continues and we will continue to have this incredible relationship with Cheri through till the end. I am sure that the friendship between us will continue beyond our struggle with infertility.”
